    Sailmon Max

Posted by CB on Jul 27th 2024

Vela Sailing is great, and this review is is in no way a reflection on their business, just the Sailmon Max. I bought this with great optimism…however…The product arrived with a dead battery and the provided charger didn’t produce enough power to get it to take a charger. After using another more powerful charger, I was finally able to get it going and connected with multiple attempts at wifi, eventually yielding a firmware update. Beware, if you cut this off before syncing with your phone, you lose all the data. A whole day’s sailing gone in a moment. While racing, there’s also no way to reset a start if there’s a general recall easily, and the start page isn't customizable. The user interface/menu system is abysmal. I spent several hours just fighting the menu system setting this up. Not to mention the lack of reasonably priced mast mounts. Pro tip, the much cheaper nautilytics mast mount works perfectly with the flat plate mount. Half the price. All that said, I would absolutely not recommend this device. Even if it did eventually get the data I wanted, wearing polarized sunglasses make it unreadable at certain angles. For the cost, I expected much better developed system. I have used many garmin devices, so I know what a quality interface/menu could be and this doesn't even come close. Maybe this will come along with future updates, but I won’t wait around and until then I will be using something else.
